Fiber from vegetables is one of the vital requirements in the food pyramid. With the thought of doing farming activities but due to limited area or environment, it is difficult to cultivate vegetables the traditional way.
We wanted to have the children to experience such activity and started a simple project that uses minimal space – how bean sprouts can be cultivated and grow from tiny green beans. Materials needed and prepared were containers, gauze, green beans, and cloths.
After 5 days, their bean sprouts were ready to be harvested. The average harvested bean sprouts are 4-5 cm in size. After harvesting, the children removed the skin and roots of the bean sprouts for cooking.
On the following day, the children gather and cooked the bean sprouts they took care of and Chinese sweet soup (tong sui). They children had great fun as they watched over their bean sprouts daily to ensure it is growing healthily.
